**Do not** stay in the youth hostels in Madrid, at least not the official ones - they have a 1.00 curfew, and the city doesn’t even come alive until midnight.

[This page](http://www.madridman.com/madridhostels.html) has links to many _hostales_ (basically just lower-budget hotels) which will provide your own room and your own shower and toilet (if you want) for just a little more than the hostels would cost you anyway.
