So there I was watching CNN at work this morning, and I look up to see Dr. Sanjay Gupta waving around a rather large phallus on the screen. The volume was turned down so I couldn’t tell at first what this, um… device was for. Turns out it’s a portable ultrasound thingy in the shape of a large phallus. Actually, it’s the little mini-screen part that is different from a regular ultrasound…the ones you typically see are huge machines that pretty much stay put in the doctor’s office. The phallus-looking part pretty much looks like the wand they typically rub on a pregnant belly to see what’s inside, at least in my experience They do also have truly dildo-shaped wands for “internal” ultrasounds, which is pretty much exactly what it sounds like…they put a condom on it, ask you to insert it yourself, and then they twist it around in there to get a good look (I’ll pretend that I don’t know this firsthand, and just say that I’ve heard it can be rather uncomfortable in more ways than one). They do it this way very early in pregnancy, or if they want to get a certain view of your ovaries. ---
