I’m totally in love with this movie - and always have been - so perhaps it’s time to take comfort in the fact that we’re all playing minor roles in Kubrick’s classic.

The documentary of how the movie was made is a very good one:
The Making of "Dr. Strangelove"
One very interesting bit is that the classic scene of Mayor Kong with the nuclear bomb was not planned until the last moment. So the bomb bay of the B52 was not designed to open on its own. The classic scene was saved by an optical effect that made the bomb bay open.
I think that I read about the production team or Kubrick saying that when Peter Sellers had an accident and could not play the part of Mayor Kong that they should get a real cowboy, so someone said: “Have you seen the actor choices we have? Its Slim Pickens”…
