> It’s acceptable if you’re at an event that starts off formal, but which gradually gets less formal as the evening wears on and the alcohol flows. For instance, you wear tucked-in shirt and tie for a wedding, but the shirt comes untucked in the process of dancing at the reception. But getting up in the morning and getting dressed like that just makes you look like a slob. Any scenario where you’d be putting on a shirt and not bothering to tuck it in, you wouldn’t be wearing a tie, either.

That’s pretty much it. The only time I’ve seen the untucked dress shirt and tie look is:

1. Fraternity cocktail party (in the 90s)
2. Later in the evening at a weding reception
3. Businessman on a bender
4. 20-something mailroom guy
5. kids at a bar-mitzvah reception
6. Prep school kid after a fistfight

Clearly the common themes with this look are “dress shirt and tie are typically required where I hang out” and “my attitude and behavior are contrary to actually wearing it properly (IOW drunk, immature, slovenly).”

Hipster. Very in thing around here, but I’m in an area where white people are the minority anyway, so it takes very little to stand out. The hipster thing seems to be the most common way to proclaim “Hey, I am not hispanic!”

> But yeah, it happens a lot with younger guys where it’s an event between casual and formal, like weddings (obviously not the wedding party) or meeting the girlfriend’s parents. Once you hit your late 20s it’s time to start tucking the shirt in, though.

Yeah, I work in academia and I sometimes see students dressed this way, presumably because they’re giving a class presentation or going to a “fancy” event. I’ve rarely if ever seen this look on a man past college age.

It’s good, in these difficult times to see some international agreement:

[Kazuhiro Kokubo](http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/othersports/winter-olympics/7240259/Winter-Olympics-2010-Japanese-snowboarder-punished-for-wearing-low-slung-trousers.html) excluded from the opening cermony of the Vancouver Winter Olympics for unapologetically flouting the team dress code.

_In response to the numerous complaints over his appearance - his shirt was also untucked and his tie was hanging loose - Kokubo was told to apologise before the media._

Why did I know it was going to be a snowboarder?
