The dates are locked in and the airfare is bought. It will be a Monday to Monday

If I’m driving from the airport to the Golden Gate Bridge, will I miss the worst of the traffic if I leave at 10:00 AM

What kind of time frame should I expect it to take from the Walnut Creek BART station to the Alcatraz ferry terminal. I assume we get off at the waterfront and walk?

Sister want to go to a bookstore at 8XX Valencia. Is this a bad neighborhood- do we need to make it back to BART before dark?
@Mdcastle: Of course, you WILL blog your daily adventures each day right here in this thread, yes? So all of us who gave you pointers can vicariously enjoy your trip too?

Realize that there is no freeway that goes through SF to the GG Bridge. You have to negotiate about half the city by streets, no matter which route you take. Take a GPS or a smart phone and expect to miss your turns a couple of times. On the other hand, as long as you stay away from 19th Ave. (boring), you can see some great parts of the city that way!

Get off at Embarcadero or any of the downtown stations and take the F Line streetcar at street level if you don’t want to walk. It is an easy walk (no hills) but it is further than you think. Muni costs just $2 and transfers are good for any streetcar/bus within a 1 1/2 to 2 hour period. I assume you are talking about the Alcatraz ferry next to Pier 39? The Ferry Building at the end of Market St. is Pier 1. It is about a mile so add either walking time or streetcar time.

Valencia St. is ok (kinda gentrified) but the closest BART stations are on Mission and notorious dens of vice (drugs, crazy homeless, etc. [the naked acrobat was at one of these stations]) so I wouldn’t like to go there at night. You are probably fine if you just give off the attitude of “I’ve seen it all, fuck off and leave me alone.” If you can’t carry off the attitude, I’d try to make it earlier in the day. Also, BART is the expensive option. Muni will get you closer to your destination and back again for $2.
Seriously, Muni for getting around the city. 511.org And you have made reservations for the Alcatraz trip, right? I’d hate for you to be turned away because the ferry was full.
