than I take back the ‘ok, that was new’. **Miller** all of the other stuff that was listed wasn’t ‘new stuff’, so I don’t think they get any points for continuing to allow (for pay) all of what we’d had prior (for free), and since we now see that there was exactly zero ‘other stuff to be added later’, than we’re back to yea, **catsix** was right. stuff was promised, not delivered. and she gets called (almost) a liar to boot.

Features shmeetures, I’d gladly give up everything but subscribing to threads and searching if we just had reliable servers that consistantly stood up to the loads.

Yeah, fair point from **JohnBckWLD**. I still disagree that any of that stuff was promised, though, it was just floated as something that might be coming at an undefined “later” date.

I have to side with the clueless one on this, and not for the first time. I genuinely hope we _won’t_ get pointless frills like avatars and graphics and other bandwidth-sludgifiers (though there does seem to be high demand for a puking smiley). The current format is adequate, though delivery could be faster/more reliable.
If the paid memberships were a requirement for survival, fine. But the membership here is quite intelligent, so don’t dangle goodies-to-be-named-later before us, expecting us to salivate. Tuba’s I’ll-try-to-overlook-your-transgressions-(this time) stance is more hostile than generous.

If it’s a case of saying that yes, this is what’s necessary to keep things here and make sure that there are adequate servers and bandwidth, that’s great. Say that. I’ll buy that and be OK with that. If there’s no new stuff coming, just be honest about that. It’s not the features, it’s the dangling of an invisible, imaginary carrot.

well, yea. that, and the accusations of lying and stuff.
glad to know there’s no hard feelings. even if we spar from time to time. I included our ‘history’ if you will, only to signal that my opinion wasn’t based on long standing palship and support and all.

Please, please… No avatars or animated graphics. The value of this place is in the content of the messages. All that other nonsense detracts from that, loads down the servers even more, and uses up bandwidth.
If you want to increase the feature set for the paid users, do it in ways that add value - give us the ability to edit messages, or speed up the site, or allow private mail, or something like that.
The Straight Dope has a very nice, very clean user interface. Don’t muck it up with lots of bling
I’ll tell you what I’d like, although I know you’re at the mercy of the software developers here. I’d like the ability to log on, click ‘download new posts’, then go to an editor on my computer to read them and reply to them. Then click ‘upload replies’. Oh, that would be sweet. We had that ability with TapCIS on CompuServe 15 years ago. It was universally loved.

THANK you. Holy crap, have you people seen other boards out there? Gifs gone wild. Posts consisting of one word and a great big animated neon pulsating heart. Or a two inch smilie. They look like my daughter’s (7th grade) sketch book.
