Just curious, but does Reuters have a reputation for lying or misrepresentation in its news stories? I’m not much of a newshound, but I’ve always been under the impression that it was generally a respectable news source.

I mean, I certainly don’t believe we should automatically believe everything we hear, but at the same time, how are we supposed to be able to form opinions about world events if we automatically disregard everything we hear from the media?

And, just for the record, I find it extremely hard to believe that the first Gulf War was completely dry. That might have been the official policy, but I think you underestimate the resourcefulness and chemical dependency of the average American.

Oddly enough, while I couldn’t find anything on Centcom’s site regarding alcohol, I did find this site:

Kind of strange that ISRAEL is sending beer to Iraq!?!

True, while we did NOT have troops “stationed” in Iraq, they WERE there. I know this because I was one of them. 🙂

The same reulations prohibiting alcohol stood there as in Saudi Arabia. As a matter of fact, the ONLY place we were EVER allowed to drink while in the Middle East was on a cruise ship that the American government had contracted to stay off the coast of Bahrain and that was ONLY for troops that were on R&R.

I went twice 😃

Hey **sailor** I agree with you that if things happened as they were reported then the persons involved should be disciplined.

If you actually think that they would be treated the same as if this had happened in an American zoo then you’re breathing fumes or something.

No. In English, murder is “the crime of unlawfully killing a person (n.b. not a tiger) esp. with malice aforethought.”

Do you have any evidence of malice aforethought? No? Didn’t think so. It’s way more likely what others have said, the tiger attacked the guy, and his buddy shot it. Regrettable? Yes. Murder? No.

I never said that Reuters was a news service that couldn’t be believed, I took exception with the fact that **DtC** seems to be an anti American asshole.

And just for the record, the first Gulf War was NOT totally dry. I know of two cases of people getting alcohol sent to them from Germany. Both cases resulted in the soldiers involved being court martialed and receiving bad conduct discharges.

I’ll quote Gen. H. Norman Schwartzkopf here…

"There will be NO alcohol while you are deployed in the Middle East/North Africa region. I will deal brutally, BRUTALLY with any person that does not follow this directive.

My old Battalion kept that message and added it to the unit history when we got back to Germany.

I still find it hard to believe that and commander would let his troops have access to weapons, civilian clothing and military vehicles while drinking though.

I kind of look at that definitionas pertaining to HUMANS. Especially as the other three definitions pretty much pertain to humans.

Not sure what “assertiong” means 😃 , but klling animals that attack humans is standard practice. See any story about attacks by rabid dogs and/or pitbulls. They put 'em down first, and ask questions later. Same thing applies here.

I doubt that the commander ‘let’ his troops have access to weapons, civilian clothing and military vehicles while drinking. But I agree that systems should have been in place to make all of that damn near impossible. (and ‘civilian’ clothing could have been something as simple as removing the jacket/helmet and just wearing khakis and t-shirt).

I don’t think they will be treated the same and that just shows the hypocrisy of the whole American effort there. The fact is that the whole “we are here to help you, to liberate you, we care about you” is proven to be a lie by the fact that Americans are daily going around killing people and destroying property without much consequence to them.

In any case, what the fuck were those idiots doing there in the first place? Troops there should be on duty at all times and if they are to have R&R they can have it in the brothels of some other country who wants them.

My dear **wring**. systems are and have ALWAYS been in place to make this damn near impossible.

I can assure you that soldiers in ANY branch no longer wear khakis, nor have they done so since the early '80’s.

The article said “casual” clothing, which to me means civilian clothing. Removing your helmet and/or jacket does NOT denote civilian clothing.

Why are you quoting Schwartzkopf? He has nothing to do with this mess.

As to alcohol in Iraq…There are many breweries and distilleries in Iraq. So booze was not frowned on by everybody.

Um. nope not the same type of case. In this case, some one stuck their hand into a cage containing a wild animal, the animal bit the person and scratched their arm. For example, my cat did the same thing to the vet’s assistant the last time she was at the vet’s and they didn’t put her down.

so, again, please provide proof (via a cite) that it’s SOP to kill a zoo animal that attacks/bites a human who stuck their hand in the cage.

You must have a different dictionary than I do.

Other than the primary definition, already quoted, we have:

2: something very dangerous or difficult “The traffic was murder”

1. something outrageous or blameworthy “getting away with murder”.

The only definition that could possibly apply is #3, which is clearly a colloquially usage. Bottom line, one can’t murder a tiger, any more than KFC murders chickens or McDonald’s murders cows.

Because at the time I was in, Schwartzkopf was the Commander of Centcom and he made the policy.

As far as there being breweries and distilleries in Iraq, I guess I learn something every day!

Alcohol was also used in the Alcan Village in Saudi Arabia while i was there. The King got VERY upset when CNN reported, and showed VIDEO of members of the 82nd Airborne at what looked like a strip show.

Turned out that the video was of Americans that worked for a Saudi national company that lived in theire own walled compund and the Saudi’s KNEW that they were drinking. The Americans decided to have a talent show for the 82nd and things got out of hand.
