DS or PSP? Need advice, like, right now!

Indeed. I think I’ll skip a generation.

I feel the same way. I was pondering getting a used one (oddly enough for about $170) at the store the other day and came to the same conclusion. I don’t even have a DS Lite, just the “old school” DS (though it’s the metallic blue, which apparently is rare in Japan, so all the ladies be checkin up on my DS :p)

Actually, I’m surprised it isn’t out in America yet, how long’s it take them to translate the damn menu system?

Clearly, you’re unaware of the enormous hacking potential of the DS. It’s a little trickier (you have to buy a flash cart, which is of dubious legality and which we won’t get into here,) but it’s also longer lasting. Since the PSP is constantly getting firmware upgrades, you then have to either not upgrade it, or wait until someone hacks the newest firmware. The DS jsut needs the cart plugged in and BAM, it’s good to go. Remove the cart and it’s the way it was before.

Off the top of my head, with a hacked DS you can:
Play any NES, SNES, GB, or GBA game. The SNES emulators aren’t great, though.
Play lots of homebrew games, including music making apps, games that are just like all those popular flash web games, games that are just like current DS or former NES, SNES, or GB games, etc…
Read e-books, play MP3s (this one isn’t great, since you can’t have a big memory card, but it’s there,) have a better browser than the built in one, etc…

Edit: Meant to add: everyone should be super-jealous of me, cause I own the best DS of them all…the Crimson-Black dual color one.

first off, I don’t like the crimson-black DS, no offense

Second off, you can do all that and a lot more on a hacked PSP. Trust me when I say it’s easily the best system out there when it comes to homebrew. It can do everything the DS can do (though I imagine some of the homebrew games are a bit different) plus it has access to all the PSOne games and N64 games (though I’ve not personally played any n64 games so I don’t know how well it emulates them). I can say, though, that the SNES emulator on a PSP is pretty darn good. Plus the memory size of the PSP (I have a 2gig card in there) allows for movies and mp3s and such (not that I ever actually use it for that).

Not dissing on teh DS, I actually like my DS better than my PSP in a lot of ways. But when it comes to hacking potential the PSP has it beat hands down

Don’t be so sure…

Actually I have the crimson one too and I think the screen looks fine.

Well, mine wasn’t part of the Brain Age 2 bundle, it was the stand-alone crimson-black one they made several months later, so maybe they fixed that problem, because mine is fine.

I got the cobalt for Christmas and exchanged it with my girlfriend for the crimson one when she got a Colts skin that looked better on the blue plastic. Both have comparable screens.

It’s settled (well, it’s been settled for some time, actually). I got the DS. I have no intentions of switching to the DSi, which I didn’t even hear about until the GameStop clerk told me.

The thing is, although the variety is on par with the NES, I’m a little late to the party, so some titles I’d probably pick up in a heartbeat aren’t readily available anymore. (In particular, I can’t find Contra 4 anywhere; I probably have no choice but to go online.) Furthermore, the DS casts a much, much wider net than anything I’ve seen before, including numerous girl-oriented games (I have no idea whether or not girls actually go for them, but the implication is clear). In short, I’m on a lot of unfamiliar territory here. Nonetheless, I definitely see some good things here. My GameStop discount card is good for a year, so there’s definitely no rush.

Will decide on the PSP later. I honestly believe that Sony makes the quality systems, but I’m just not seeing enough of what I need yet. Again, no rush.
