I like this one because, even though much of it is set up, it’s pretty easy to tell that there is genuine affection among the family members. As pointed out upthread, low drama.
Jase absolutely cracks me up. He likes to be the trigger for pranks, but his verbal humor is a bit dryer. Si, well, he reminds me a lot of my late Uncle Max. Full of stories, maybe not the hardest worker but sometimes will slay you with his insight or knowledge of something you wouldn’t even connect him with. It’s interesting to observe his interaction with his brother, Miss Kay and his nephews. It actually reminds me of my mom’s side of the family.
The difference between this show and other reality shows is this: if you packaged this as what America is like to people in other countries I’d be ok with that. I think this could be part of the charm of the show - in a way it captures a slice of American life that most of the viewers consider ideal. You have a family that is loving and supportive of one another. They have created their own business and grown it so they are very successful and yet they still appear to be small enough that the people who work there can keep a balanced life. The men are all hyper masculine and yet behind the talk they are all kind and deeply respectful of the women in their lives. They look goofy, but they would be a lot of fun to go camping with.
Heh, my 12 year old daughter sent me that last night. She and her friends love the show and it’s a frequent topic of discussion. Last night the three of us sat on the couch together, watched and laughed. Isn’t that what TV is supposed to be all about?
I hate for sahirrnee to see that picture though… she didn’t realize Si was already taken.
This 100%. I would much rather this show play anywhere in the world than almost any other show on TV. This family is the epitome of the American Dream.
This show is not funny because, “look at those silly dumb rednecks.” This show if funny because they all have great senses of humor.
One thing we hadn’t realized until this weekend was how often show members make public appearances around the country. While some are corporate in nature like Jase speaking on leadership and many are more faith oriented, Phil and Ms. Kay and Jep and Jessica often speak to church groups, some are just for fun. That’s what we went to Saturday, Si sitting on stage at the Spring Crawfish Festival for a half hour telling stories, answering questions, etc. He was predictably hilarious and near exactly what you see on the show. When asked, he says Willie isn’t so much mean but just a constant prankster and that the only difficult part of the show is the dinner scenes because due to the filming they can’t just dig in and eat despite all the good food and being real hungry.
Si was treated like a rock star Saturday. We had a hard time getting in because of all the traffic and the fair grounds surrounding the stage was packed with women in pink Happy Happy Happy shirts and men in camo and Under Armor sunglasses, all with cell phones raised high trying to get a shot. I think Si thoroughly enjoyed himself and was treated to rousing applause.
For those that watch it weekly, I wonder if they agree that the shows if anything are even better now than before. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed everything as of late and the final episode Wednesday in Hawaii looks to be a hoot.
Also, for the record everything I’ve bought online from DD has been really good quality. I’ll be using these calls, hats and stuff for a long time to come.
