In Oklahoma, second degree murder, which is what Adacia Chambers is charged with, is defined as follows:

> [@](#):
>
> When perpetrated by an act imminently dangerous to another person and evincing a depraved mind, regardless of human life, although without any premeditated design to effect the death of any particular individual

So it certainly looks like second degree murder is the appropriate charge. It’s pretty much a textbook description of her actions that day.

Below is the punishment set for the crime of second degree murder:

> [@](#):
>
> A person who is convicted of or pleads guilty or nolo contendere to murder in the second degree shall be guilty of a felony punishable by imprisonment in a state penal institution for not less than ten (10) years nor more than life.

I assume she could be found not guilty by reason of insanity despite the line about evincing a depraved mind.

Of course. That’s because _depraved mind_ does not mean _insane_.

For some reason I’ve always thought depravity was a consequence of, if not insanity, then at least mental imbalance. Thanks for arsing me to look it up.

Yes, I’m sure that if we lived in an alternate universe where there were fewer restrictions on who could drive and driving drunk was legal, we’d have a lot more of these incidents. Glad we don’t live in that universe.

Nice to see they don’t reach out their skeleton hands beyond the Great Divide.

Are you aware that Oklahoma law allows for the possibility of a type of punishment which most consider to be “more” (bigger, more severe) than life in prison?

ETA: I do see your point, though – that statute could have been worded better.

That was a pretty funny observation though.
