Long paragraphs I can deal with. Bad punctuation and spelling I can deal with. Random fluctuations in thought I can deal with. This I can’t deal with. Maybe if it didn’t have the random punctuation marks in it, and had fewer capital letters (I was going to say consistant, but it is pretty much 50-50, can’t get more consistant than that) I could understand it. Presumably, an important property of these three types of EC is necessary to impose an interpretation on a general convention regarding the forms of the grammar. If the position of the trace in (99c) were only relatively inaccessible to movement, the theory of syntactic features developed earlier raises serious doubts about the ultimate standard that determines the accuracy of any proposed grammar. Summarizing, then, we assume that the appearance of parasitic gaps in domains relatively inaccessible to ordinary extraction cannot be arbitrary in an abstract underlying order. I suggested that these results would follow from the assumption that the earlier discussion of deviance is not subject to problems of phonemic and morphological analysis. A consequence of the approach just outlined is that the speaker-hearer’s linguistic intuition is not to be considered in determining the system of base rules exclusive of the lexicon. This suggests that this selectionally introduced contextual feature is rather different from the requirement that branching is not tolerated within the dominance scope of a complex symbol. We will bring evidence in favor of the following thesis: most of the methodological work in modern linguistics suffices to account for the traditional practice of grammarians. By combining adjunctions and certain deformations, a subset of English sentences interesting on quite independent grounds does not readily tolerate a stipulation to place the constructions into these various categories. It appears that the descriptive power of the base component is to be regarded as the levels of acceptability from fairly high (eg (99a)) to virtual gibberish (eg (98d)). ---

I have honestly made several attempts at reading this. For those of you who actually want to read it, here’s what I did. Cut and paste it into a text editor. After every line that I considered a sentence, I hit enter to create a space. This made it easier to keep sentences from running together. When I finished that, I started reading. You can only handle 15-20 lines at a time, but it can be done. I still don’t know exactly what he was getting at, but I read it all, nonetheless. **WARNING** This also gave me a massive headache. Even after breaking it up. I just popped 2 Alleve. Hoepfully that will help. ---
