> Bad commentaries are pretty bad, but good ones are terrific. On the commentary to _Three Kings,_ for example, David O. Russell goes into detail about how the script he was given was basically just a heist movie, and he spent 18 months deepening it and enriching it by making it more relevant to the politics of Iraq and the Middle East. It’s almost as fascinating to listen to as the original movie was to watch.

Wow. After this quote and all of I Heart Huckabees I’m convinced David O. Russell considers himself the deepest man in the world.

Maybe I’m just uncultured, but “war is bad” is the only message I got from Three Kings.

Which I forgot to mention was a movie that I really really REALLY liked, so it’s not a criticism.

I almost always listen to the commentaries. As had been said, there’s a wide spectrum in quality of commentary tracks. On the LOTR, Peter Jackson was very interesting to listen to throwing new light on the films, and on the actors’ commentary track, well the hobbits were fun (though not always as fun as they thought they were). Peter Jackson will be on my must listen to list (if I had one that is). I will also listen to any commentary that Joss Whedon does, be it Buffy, Angel or Firefly. For me he falls into both the illuminating and just damn funny categories.

I do always check the DVDs to see if they have commentaries, and am pleased when they are included. I never, never listen to them before watching either the t.v. episode or movie though.
