Which I forgot to mention was a movie that I really really REALLY liked, so it’s not a criticism.
I almost always listen to the commentaries. As had been said, there’s a wide spectrum in quality of commentary tracks. On the LOTR, Peter Jackson was very interesting to listen to throwing new light on the films, and on the actors’ commentary track, well the hobbits were fun (though not always as fun as they thought they were). Peter Jackson will be on my must listen to list (if I had one that is). I will also listen to any commentary that Joss Whedon does, be it Buffy, Angel or Firefly. For me he falls into both the illuminating and just damn funny categories.
I do always check the DVDs to see if they have commentaries, and am pleased when they are included. I never, never listen to them before watching either the t.v. episode or movie though.
