E-book readers? Kindle? Please help.

Some books have color illustrations, or other color graphics, though my nook is not particularly good at graphics (and it’s B&W, as well). I do miss the cover art on my ebooks. I usually have a tiny display, about 1" by .75", of the cover, but that’s just enough to barely distinguish one book from another.

That’s correct. I didn’t mean that you can’t access the Kindle from Linux - you can. I transfer ebooks to my Kindle from Linux all the time.

What I was saying is that the Kindle for X software doesn’t have a Linux version.

People have hacked their Kindles to turn them into Linux devices, and it’s possible to use the “cloud reader” app or to run Kindle for PC in WINE if you’re desperate to run that program in Linux. Me, I’ll just reboot into Windows and use the program there if I want to use it. Really all I use it for is to preview books to see how they’ll look on my Kindle. But I like the software and it’d be nice to use it directly from Linux. Not a deal-breaker, though, it’s perfectly possible to use the Kindle with Linux and even to buy a book from Amazon and send it to your Kindle from within Linux.

Do the colour versions work without a backlight? One of the main selling points for me was that Kindle (and other ereaders) use passive lighting rather than being backlit. I find it impossible to read for any length of time on an iPad or laptop screen, whereas the Kindles I’ve used I can read for hours at a time.
