Early post WWII aircraft = GORGEOUS!

Best. Thread. Ever.

I spent 3 hours last night viewing every plane posted.

The wife couldn’t believe it. She thought I was watching porn!

Made me feel like a kid again.

The planes I mean, not the porn. :stuck_out_tongue:

And then there’s this sensible, conservative little number–

If more than one window opens, go to the one with the photos.

Just goes to show it wasnt only the Germans who made wacky aircraft.

Here’s a British one

Thanks!

Of course all the Dopers who love planes are what really made this thread take off.

I was reminicing about my Grandpa and some of the stuff we did together, and I just had to share our love of beautiful airplanes, regardless of what their purpose for being made may be.

So, in a way, all you Dopers are sending a tribute to my Grandpa. Thanks, he would’ve loved it.

I could post here continuously, but we seem to have strayed somewhat…:o

The link you posted for the wacky Brit plane was dead.
I want to see! Whaa!

Umm, it DID work, now it doesnt.

Try this one:

They were already gearing up for that when I was at Garber, said that the tour there was going to be scaled back as they were getting the Dulles facility ready. I am thrilled I got to see it when I did.

(Am I in my own seperate universe in this thread? C’mon, nobody else likes the Northrop Gamma (you could scale it down and it would be the hood ornament on a 30s Deusenberg) or the Staggerwing Beech?)

If we’ve switched from gorgeous to just plain weird, there ain’t much that beats the Transavia Airtruk.

Yup, we’ve DEFINATELY strayed:rolleyes:

Anyhoo, I see your Transavia Airtruk, and RAISE you this :

The infamous Ca60

Damn it, another duff link.

Ok, try this: http://www.pilots-n-planes-ww1.com/Triplane-Madness/Cap-Ca-60.jpg

I opened the link thinking it was gonna be a bolton paul defiant , but yeah that sucker in the link is major artistic liscense on the part of the designer ,lol.

Made me think of Biplane Hurricanes.

Declan

The Turret Lysander (P12 Delanne) flew very well as it turns out. They were thinking of using it to strafe beach areas at invasion time. I can kinda see what they were thinking but…

Hah! I was thinking to myself, “Self, that looks like a very oddly done up Lysander.”

The regular one is kind of cute, in an “odd is cute” sort of way.

Whoa!

Those last few planes looked like they were out of “Crimson Skies,” which actually was a pretty fun flying game.

Very much so.

I looked all over for a decent picture of a Grumman Mallard, but couldn’t find one worth posting here. Them’s some cute amphibs!

How about some General Aviation planes?

I always thought the BD-5 (another shot) was absolutely gorgeous. So was the BD-10. Too bad Bede is such a terrible engineer. He’s got a great eye for design.

The Swiftfury is absolutely jaw-dropping, especially in person. I got to sit in one at Sun-N-Fun 1990, and it was just beautiful.

Then there’s the Rutan Varieze, a truly fantastic airplane.

Talking of weird stuff, does anyone have a picture of the “Caspian Sea Monster”, which isn’t strictly speaking an aircraft but an ekranoplan (ground-effect craft)?

I got yer Caspian Sea Monster right here, dude.
