anyone else find it odd that some food commercials have animals (cartoons) urging us to eat them? ---

Hmm, all the examples I can think of the animal itself wasn’t going to get eaten. Like that tuna guy. He just wasn’t good enough. But the idea itself is a little odd. I try not to think about things like that. ---

Where I’m from (and any other Melbournians, and maybe Aussies too, can check this out), there’s a brand of lollies called Natural Lollies or something to that effect. One subset of this brand is called ‘forbidden fruits’, and for some ungodly reason only known to the advertising artists (possibly boredom), the package bears one image of two anthropomorphic apples making out. As if that weren’t bad enough, there’s also a reclining pineapple at the bottom, winking seductively. I don’t know what they were thinking, but god save me if I ever buy any of those. ~ Isaac PS Sorry about that brief bit of irrelevance. ---

There used to be an ad in the UK with a cartoon that implied that Bird’s Eye (or whoever)'s peas were posh peas - they got into the Bird’s Eye Country Club to be packaged and happily eaten, while the crippled or misshapen peas were left in the fields to rot. IIRC, one of them had a walking stick and looked on sadly as the beaming, shiny elite went off to be frozen and eaten. Bizarre. ---

I thought there was a very early commercial for everything pork (sausages, rashers, you name it), brought by a cartoon piggy. Kids found it so upsetting they didn’t want to eat pork anymore. I think it was the very first time in a commercial the food was actually associated with an animal. Didn’t sit well. I saw this in a documentary once, I think this commercial dates back to the 60’s So what you’re saying surporises me. I’ve never seen a cartoonish animal praising its own chops. Ask any kid where “meat” comes from, and I betcha they’ll say: the shop, the supermarket, the butcher’s… Maybe kids that grow up on farms’ll know better, but most kids love in cities/towns nowadays. Ever notice that there’s a lot of commercials on about food and drink after 7 pm? they want us to stuff ourselves and buy more. ---

I find it odd that we also have talking bottles of medication, specifically antacids. Think of the precedent being set - what’s next, talking Preparation H? “NOOOOO - Don’t put me THERE!!! NOOOOOOOOOO!!” ---

There was another frozen vegetable ad - for McCain’s in Australia if I recall correctly, in which the farmer was picking all his baby vegetables, packing them into prams and driving them tenderly to the factory, where a, uh, nanny took charge of the prams full of baby vegetables, cooing over how sweet they were. The vegetables even emitted baby cries on the way to the factory. I can only imagine their baby vegetable screams of horror when they were later processed and frozen. It was a disturbing ad to say the least. ---
