Of course he doesn’t.
But the fact that the second guy may have been a jerk, doesn’t change the fact that in this instance for no apparent reason the OP declined to go with what most of us apparently consider common courtesy.

Why is that? I mean automakers have come an agreement on standardizing most other car controls.
Well, according to the OP:
so it looks like the OP was just stopping at the closest pump when the second guy came up.
Ok, so my description was not full and needed to include the gas station I usually use. There is no “one way sign” so it is really a free for all with cars entering from each of the two entrances. Pulling forward could lead to pissing someone off coming into the other entrance and staying at the first pump could also piss someone off. But, thinking more about it (and really, that is all I did today) this is a small gas station at a fairly busy intersection so it is always a clusterfuck. At a typical suburban station, that is larger, it would probably make it easier for everyone if the standard was to pull through.
That still does not take away from the fact that honk the horn person was an ass.
Now I am glad I have a lot of gas stations like this one to go to:

Avoids all this crap. Except when it’s crowded and people are dicks when it comes to queueing up to wait for pumps. I usually park in a space then and wait until it clears out, cause people will inevitably cut you off if you decide to circle to get a pump, or if you try to be good and wait the person you are waiting behind takes for fucking ever and in the meantime other pumps open, you back out then someone cuts you off again. Then you commit homicide or suicide.
“They” really should standardize gas cap placement (driver or passenger) and then make all gas stations have one-way signs in the parking lots so people can just queue and be done. myskepticsight’s example of a station with no two pumps in a row is also a good idea.
Sign, sign, everywhere a sign, do this, don’t do that, can’t you read the siiign, yeah!
What sign? who pays attention to the placards that are pasted all over every available service station surface? Ciggies, car warsh, air, wipes, wood, fluids, tabs, lotto, PBR, salt, coke, red hots, jerky, milk, gas, beer and now Pull forward? when Im done pumping ma’am. Sometimes I don’t want to get wet and that is where I’ll be if i pull forward to the last pump, in the rain.
I don’t litter, I wear my seatbelt, signal my intentions, mostly drive the speed limit. But if I have a pump preference, then damn the rules! :o
Yesterday at the gas station where I got honked at, I read all the signs on the pump. NOWHERE does it say to pull up to the furthest pump. So I guess it’s not a rule at some places and I can pump wherever I want then.
