Keep in mind that public fire hydrant systems are localized mainly to towns and cities, always have been, always will. When our house burnt down 2 years ago, it too 7 towns worth of tanker trucks to haul the water out to keep the barn from burning. House was a giant soot and detritus ‘snow globe’ but the barn was fine. [yup, you shove high pressure water hoses in all the openings, everything just turns to a giant whirl of soot, embers, household goods and water … when done, the next day the whole inside of the house was pretty much 3 feet deep in yuck. I have pictures of it.]
Back in the depression, sometimes even the towns didn’t have fire hydrants, nor really fire trucks. To save your belongings you took them out of the fire … since you can’t save the structure, you save what you can.
