Apparently people used to do things like this; there’s a scene in “To Kill A Mockingbird” where Atticus helps some neighbors remove furniture from their burning house. No, they don’t attempt to put out the fire; they throw furniture out the windows. :smack:

Also in the Simpsons, where the pro baseball ringers are systematically disabled, and in Jose Canseco’s scene he heroically saves a woman’s possessions from a fire, one by one. He didn’t get injured or lost like the other players because he is an asshole and bullied the writers into making him heroic.

Keep in mind that public fire hydrant systems are localized mainly to towns and cities, always have been, always will. When our house burnt down 2 years ago, it too 7 towns worth of tanker trucks to haul the water out to keep the barn from burning. House was a giant soot and detritus ‘snow globe’ but the barn was fine. [yup, you shove high pressure water hoses in all the openings, everything just turns to a giant whirl of soot, embers, household goods and water … when done, the next day the whole inside of the house was pretty much 3 feet deep in yuck. I have pictures of it.]

Back in the depression, sometimes even the towns didn’t have fire hydrants, nor really fire trucks. To save your belongings you took them out of the fire … since you can’t save the structure, you save what you can.

In the days before most people had insurance, that may have seemed to make sense, although at a cost of a lot of lives back in the day.

Several months ago, I had a conversation with a man who, years ago, lived in an apartment building which caught fire and he had to be restrained from going back in to retrieve a jar containing about $1,000, all the money he had. It turned out that his unit wasn’t damaged, and he didn’t know that the Federal Reserve has a department of people who examine damaged money and replace it.
