**raindog** , speaking as someone who is (I hope) entering into constructive dialogue with **Ed** back in ATMB, I would like to say that you’re an oleaginous tit, and are achieving nothing here save the unjustified inflation of your own ego. It never ceases to amaze me that on this, a messageboard whose users come here to talk about stuff that interests them, people are sometimes surprised that when something interests the users, they like to talk about it. Although I suppose there’s always one nobber in every thread who likes to pronounce his deep distaste for everyone else’s interest, so it’s proably just as silly of me to be surprised by **raindog**. You know, this board supposedly has a copious share of the highly intelligent, and such people should have extensive vocabularies. Just because the ubermod says you shouldn’t use certain words doesn’t mean you can’t communicate effectively. Case in point: Duke basketball fans are known for being insidiously creative for fucking with the heads of the opposing team and coming up with cheers and chants that are worthy of Pulitzers. They still resort to utter crassness when the occasion calls for it, and in one game they got out of hand. Coach K got on the mike and asked them to tone down the language. So on the next call the ref blew, instead of yelling “BULLSHIT,” they yelled “WE BEG TO DIFFER! WE BEG TO DIFFER!” So there’s plenty of ways to bust somebody’s nuts without using the C word. Take this as a challenge. See how the OP pissed so many people off by calling them unemployed bums? And this was done with rated G words. ---

Listen. I appove of what Ed is trying to do – reduce the rancor and name calling, and as a side benefit, keep more threads on the rails. But he’s chosen a list of BAD WORDS that won’t be tolerated, and that is not a good choice. Most folks here understand that. I am probably in a minority in thinkng that the “don’t be a jerk” rule should be enforced more aggressively, and it would achieve the same ends without a thousand posts asking, “Is THIS phrase acceptable?” ---

The best way to handle the protest over the deballsing of the Pit is to stage a peaceful protest. I have in mind a procession to the Straight Dope headquarters in Chicago, led by the saintly Father Fenris. Participants will carry banners with positive messages like “We Love Ed”, “Ed, We Beseech Thee For Redress” and “Straight Dope Chicago Is _NOT_ Moribund”. All marchers will be carefully checked to make sure they are not carrying snark and invective. The march will culminate with an anticipated speech and blessing by Cecil Himself, after which His Praetorian Guard will distribute snacks and condoms. Let’s see - my calendar is open for a week from Sunday. Trust me, it’ll go down in SDMB history as **Groovy Sunday**. ---

Ed’s got his work cut out for him. I don’t know if there is a grace period or if the new rules take effect March 1 or what. But clearly a line must be drawn, and if this kind of witless, banal trash is acceptable then there should be no new rules. ---
