The reports I saw said that he was a Marine instructor and test pilot in WWII. In Korea he flew unarmed scout airplanes (O-1 Bird dog) on multiple combat missions. He stayed in the Marine Reserves and reached the rank of colonel. He left the Marine Reserves and joined the California Air National Guard and made the rank of Brigadier General.
