soulmurk: I think a lot of modern scholars dispute the veracity of Griswold’s claims. I do not know. I am not a Poe scholar, merely an admirer.
It also wouldn’t bother me if he had been a user and a heavy drinker.

During a recent trip to Baltimore I stopped by the Westminster Burying Ground to pay my repects at Poe’s final resting place. Turns out that he has two graves! One headstone marks the original plot, while the other is a big fancy monument nearer the front gate. Furthermore, I was informed that he may not actually be buried under either marker–supposedly when he was first buried he didn’t rate a headstone, and years later when the monument was proposed, they more or less picked a spot and hoped for the best.
Poe: The Man with Two (Possibly Three) Graves. Even in death, mysterious and creepy.
You don’t get The Annotated Poe for the stories – yo get it for the Nots and Annotations. The Penguin Editions of Poe have pretty good footnotes, too.
Cool fact, only partially remembered: because of his supposed love of alcohol, there is someone who has placed a bottle (or half-bottle) of brandy at Poes grave pretty much since he died.
Ok…now I need to look this up, because it sounds silly otherwise…

I first heard of this when it was at its 50-year tradition, and that isn’t the article I read, but close enough!
