It’s derived from iota, the smallest Greek letter. Jot or tittle.

Well, admittedly, that was a departure from my usual moderation policy, which is “Don’t do any work if you can possibly avoid it.” However, the OP’s request caught me in a moment of uncharacteristic generosity. Plus, I wanted to use that line about ending sexism in North America.

I can report that here in Honduras machismo has indeed survived your OP alteration…but just barely, as befits our being not quite in North America, yet not in South America either.
