# Editing

I tried to go back and edit a post of mine, but the system wouldn’t let me. What went wrong?

Nothing went wrong. Only moderators and administrators have the ability to edit posts. This is so there’s proof later on, if it should become necessary, of exactly who started the fire. You can’t go back and take out your inflammatory remarks and then exclaim in wide-eyed innocence, “I dunno what he’s so upset about, all I said was…”

But the Forum rules say: “Messages can be edited by their author. Messages can be deleted by their author.” If I can’t actually do any editing, that sure does make it sound like I’m supposed to be able to.

Some of the text in the help or FAQ is the vBulletin “boilerplate” text that has not been modified to fit the special configuration implemented at the SDMB.

It’s lead to much confusion, however, it is the statement that is wrong. It is straight from the software company. The feature itself has not been used here at all except by the moderators/administrators. No one has gotten around to updating the statement.
Maybe it is time to think about it. The board has been running good for a while and it would save at least one or 2 threads a week asking why users can’t edit their own posts.
