Oh, come on, Cleveland’s much cooler than Cincinnati. (But not as cool as Chicago.)

I don’t like to hear politicians say these things because it’s such empty pandering. I suppose my feelings about New York have fewer qualifiers than my feelings about America.

Jealousy, pure and simple. While I’ll admit there are parts of Queens that try to emulate LonGuyland, those parts are not the real Queens.

First we have to fight over where to have the beers…Manhattan, Queens or ‘The Island’. Then we fight over which is better. Then we fight over which city is the biggest NYC wannabe (given every city is a NYC wannabe - the rest of youz guyz can just own up and admit it - we already know). At no point, however, should we stop drinking beers.

_(Full disclosure: I am a NY Islanders fan)_

NYC is the SAFEST large city in the US. That means we have the least crime. You can walk through the park at night. The movie The Warriors was not a documentary.

There are those who say that Nassau County has become NYC’s 6th borough
So are they imitating NYC or is Queens imitating LI?

"Warriors, come out to play-i-ay. "

What about _Escape From New York_? Does that accurately represent the pre-Guilliani Manhattan? I mean, it did have a “Chock Full O’ Nuts” store and all. (Trivia note: many of the exterior shots were filmed in East St. Louis, and needed little in the way of set dressing to achieve that low-budget post-apocalyptic look. Motto: “East St. Louis: The City of Burning Cars.” Sister city: Beruit. Primary industry: Methamphetamine.)

The only thing I’m jealous of is that you have a not entirely unpleasant commute to Shea Stadium. \*(Full disclosure: NY Mets fan) \*

I certainly could not have said this better.

Perhaps we should have those beers at the Garden during an Islanders/Rangers game. Then, when we tire of fighting each other, we can join forces and fight Ranger fans.

I know what the OP means. I remember Sandra Bullock appearing on The Daily Show not too long ago; she was talking about Austin and describing a local barbecue place. She started to say, “It’s about 20 miles outside the city…” and Jon snickered and said something like, “You call it the city, how quaint.” She just gave him a perplexed “How dumb can you be?” look and went on, and generally I really like Jon, but it was such a shining example of New York provincialism, I was embarrassed for him.

Then there’s Letterman pushing the greatest city motto every other night. Makes one wonder where the inferiority complex comes from.

This is news to me. I thought The City was strictly the County and City of San Francisco.

I did hear somewhere that ‘Frisco’ was attaining some acceptability, much in the same way that psychiatrists or psychologists don’t like to be called shrinks, except by by one another. Another reason was the mechanism by which a derogatory or disliked term is adopted as a badge of defiance.

Crap. I meant when you’r ewithin Santa Rosa/Reno/Monterey, saying “the City” refers to the C&C of SF.

Unless you’re from one of the suburbs. People from Daly City to Redwood City to Walnut Creek to Tiburon claim to be from “San Francisco,” so much so that when my friend went to UC Riverside and said he was from SF, everyone asked, “yeah, but what city?”

Uhm…another City sighting/citing today. Went up to the DMV in downtown Yonkers (where I am, it’s closer than the one in my own borough) and took a walk along the revitalizing waterfront. Fell into a conversation with a born and bred Yonkerite about the new apartment complexes springing up all over and he said one of the selling points is that they’re right next to the train station and “people take it right into the City.”

FWIW.

Extra Ironic because if you dropped Yonkers into Iowa it would be a big city.
Population is 196,086.

While I’m very much on the “it’s my city, take it or leave it” bandwagon, I’m confused by the examples offered by the OP. One is a children’s movie of no particular import, one is a history of New York, one is a New York public official. It’s entirely appropriate for the latter two to be publically praising the city - it’s their raison d’etre. So what the fuck is the problem?
