I’m honestly dubious how much use the transition office will be even if they agree to start the process. Seriously, I think Trump will do any petty thing he can to cause Biden and his new administration trouble. As such I think Biden just needs to do his thing and not rely on the Trump admin at all. ---

Absolutely. They should call up the corresponding officials from the Obama administration for help instead - I am sure the vast majority of them will do everything they can to assist. ---

The republican party is ace at enforcing loyalty to the party. You either toe-the-line, always, or you are out. It does not matter who you are or how long you have been a good republican you will be hung-out to dry on the spot if you dare to go against the leadership. Remember John Bolton, Trump’s super-hawk national security adviser? The guy was made from pure conservatism. Hell, he was probably more conservative than most in congress and the Trump White House. But he crossed Trump, was fired and then thoroughly raked over the coals as a liberal stooge by conservatives. Never mind his 40 years being anything but a liberal anything. And that all happened in the span of a few days. Just _boom_…you’re out. Why anyone would want to belong to such a group where one misstep gets you crucified is beyond me but obviously many do. Anyway, I don’t think they will allow any room for dissent from the ranks. ---

I’ll believe it when I see it. So far, the moderate Republicans seem to be focused on rhetoric, which is important, but is a criticism tailored to prevent them from having to commit to anything important. When republicans only criticize rhetoric I think it speaks to the fact that they want people like McConnell to take the bullets for them. Also, as we saw in 2009-2010, when the Republicans have exactly enough votes to reach some important threshold, it can be a great team-building exercise for them. They know they have to unite behind McConnell and there are no free votes so they stop jockeying to be the Colllins/Murkowski that can break with the party. ---

Nope. Not if McConnell is in charge; he just won’t bring it to the floor, and they’ll get no chance to vote. They’d have to _caucus_ with the Dems, which would put McConnell out of that position. But to do that I believe they’d have to declare that they’re no longer Republicans (they wouldn’t have to switch to D, they could declare they’re independents.) That’s a much bigger leap than just going against their party on a specific vote. ---
