Electoral districts: other than the US, do any other mature democracies leave it to the politicians?

Fun thread. As noted, multi-member districts using proportional voting are the best method and pretty much eliminate gerrymandering. Virginia Conressman Don Beyer’s Fair Representation Actaddresses this nicely but is languishing in a House that’s probably not yet ready to deal with such fairness.

And, yes, the side with the numerical advantage routinely exploits it via gerrymandering. I live in Maryland, I am confronted with this reality. But I would enjoy arguing with anyone who would seriously suggest that Republicans would generally be more likely to advocate for a fairer and more modern electoral system than would Democrats.
