Fingers only (or thumb & fingers for chords). Never could get the hang of holding on to a pick - I don’t double on guitar at all except for a little bottle-neck for my own amusement.
I voted “mostly [bare] finger style” which to me includes plucking/popping/slapping/tapping, but I mix it up on electric bass sometimes with flat picks, finger picks, e-Bow, vibrators, slides, whips, shoes, and mizrabs.
Pick, but because I played heavy metal and hardcore.
It was just easier for me to play faster, and get the crisp sound you need for that music.
Cliff Burton from Metallica used to play with his fingers though, and used three instead of two, so for a brief time I experimented with using three fingers, but eventually gave up.
A Cliff Burton I was not.
Back when I played, I used fingers.
Because, that’s the way Jack Bruce did it!
I play almost exclusively fingerstyle. The only time I use a pick is when I play (usually) heavy metal where the bass is playing repeating 16th-notes on the same note: chunka-chunka-chunka-chunka-… My primary bass influences, though, are Geddy Lee and Steve Harris, both of whom write parts that require a lot of hopping from one string to another, something I’ve found next to impossible for me to do with a pick.
I voted for basically the same, some of the sounds you can get with a pick you just can’t get with your fingers.
I can’t say I like one more than the other, so I paly both about 50/50
Mostly fingers but occasionally stuff just sounds a wee bit better with a pick. A more rolling sound which often sounds better with a more driving beat.
Double bass - usually one finger, two when needed for speed
Electric bass - two fingers
I also voted for Basically the same. Since I am originally a guitar player, I used to play mostly with a pick, but gradually started finding some things easier fingerstyle. Also, I play in a band with some ethnic background, so for a lot of gigs our opening set is traditional music, so much more suited for fingerstyle. When I do use a pick, I find the most comfortable being the super thick Dunlop Tortex Sharps. I prefer the black ones (sorry, havent memorized the thicknesses), but the only ones I can find to buy in a store are the purple, which do just fine. I would buy them direct from Dunlop’s website, but I the minimum is 72 picks. It’s not that expensive, but the only reason I could justify buying 72 picks is because I lose them all the time. Hmm. Might have to just spring for them…
