How adorable. Lyrics like: “He said we must be fair today Equal work means equal pay Mmm, mmm, mm! Barack Hussein Obama!” are clearly indoctrination. Is it a nationwide plot? No. But here it is, right in front of you. I await the mental gymnastics required to somehow justify or minimize it. I’m not going to bother pointing out why it’s wrong. All of you know why. ---

Your sarcasm is cute…althought it’s kind of the “whistling past the graveyard” variety. I thought about making this point at the end of my OP, but I thought it would be too much of a distraction to process it along with the other information. You wouldn’t be so casually flippant if the song had been praising George W. Bush. ---

You chose the one set of lyrics that specifically refer to him as a “black American” to respond to me saying that teaching the children to sing the song was wrong. I am not a racist. I am not a “gun nut”. I am not a “rabid right-winger”. I am an educated American citizen who is far enough to the right of Barack Obama to disagree with him on a number of policy issues. ---

You know, productivity at my office has gone up 20% since the government made us start singing that song to start the day each morning. Sorry if I’m being too casually flippant. BTW, just asking here; is there some actual context to this, or are we just supposed to be outraged without knowing a single thing about how this came about? I mean, there’s no question I’m outraged, you bet. I’m carrying enough outrage around to fill a dump truck. But who do I write to to express my not inconsiderable outrage, anyway? ---

Well, i think this was a Bad Decision. If i were a parent, i’d be pretty annoyed if my kid were made to sing a song like that in school. And i’m a supporter of Barack Obama. While there is no escaping the fact that politics ends up being taught in schools, and that many so-called neutral or objective things we teach children are, in fact, quite political, i think that praising specific, incumbent politicians or political parties is extremely problematic. On the other hand, i’ll only be able to get _really_ worked up about this when the right consents to getting God the fuck out of science classes. ---
