# Eliminating AIDS

How in the world is ANYONE still contracting AIDS in this day and age? Haven’t we all been pretty much AIDS experts for the last 10 or 15 years or so?

Maybe if you’re an over 30 white person (particularly if you’re gay). However, the worst atrocity of the AIDS epidemic is our old friend apathy. How on earth do you keep someone’s attention for more than 15 years? And let’s not even talk about all those thousands of teenagers in the interim who we’ve had to re-educate year after year after year after year after… well, you get the point. Worse, there’s even a _backlash_ against safe sex - in the gay community (and presumably in the straight community as well) there is a relatively new subculture who enjoy “barebacking,” which is purposely having sex without a condom in order to induce HIV infection. No, I’m not kidding. These are people who, for various reasons, want to become HIV-positive.

The education never, ever ends, not until this thing is wiped out or a definitive cure is found.
