Emailing v texting

Not representative at all.

Exactly this. Though for me there is also heaping spoonful of not being a white-collar professional who communicates much with his boss. My boss is 35, so very much a texter and he does text me to ask questions from time to time. But said questions are generally not time or job critical and he is well aware of my habits. I’m not salaried or paid standby so if I’m not “on the clock” I’m not obligated to respond in any way, shape or form. Which he approves of, as he also is not salaried and doesn’t get paid standby (his position used to, but that was abolished as a cost-cutting measure). Which means on his weekend he turns off his own work phone and generally won’t respond to any work inquiries unless it is genuinely an emergency that his backup can’t handle.

I work in the middle of the night these days, half the time by myself so I have no direct oversight, only supervisory personnel at a different site that have only a vague idea what I do or how I do it and thus are worthless in an emergency. If I have to call them as a CYA thing, it is to request support be called out or tell them something is going down and in those cases I call the shots. I’ve seen my supervisor in person I think twice in maybe three months. So when I need something or have to let him know about this, that or the other situation, I communicate by e-mail :grinning:.

Mid 40s, work 2nd shift. Text me, for chrissakes. I’ll see it right away, even if I respond at my convenience.

Emails? I have four accounts, a couple of them legacies from the 90s. They’re all basically spam catchers at this point, with a few exceptions.

So no, I don’t check that email shit.

My dad likes to send me videos or other files that are way too big for SMS.
He will text me, to alert me to go check my email, for some random-ass video.

Texting advantage -
more likely to go thru in low bandwidth

Email advantages -

  • available on all of my devices
  • larger attachments
  • better sort/storage capabilities
  • better search capability
  • better at trapping spam
  • not attached to the device; don’t lose them when replacing or if lost/stolen (need to have backup turned on to save them)
