Windows 7 and Firefox here, most characters can be seen; but a few, like the first 2 characters in the last line of the previous post, appear as a boxes with numbers. Do I need to install a language pack or what changes should I make to the browser? ---

Running the latest firefox on a desktop I see nothing but boxes. After a cursory googling it appears I need to install a greasemonkey script to translate the emoji into pictures; I can’t even find a proper plugin. I’ll take a pass on emoji. ---

Odd. It works on Windows 8 Firefox, but not on Windows XP Firefox. And I’ve upgraded all my XP fonts with the newer Windows 8 versions. So either it’s from a font I don’t have on XP, or there’s something messed up about extended Unicode support in Windows XP. I do have a lot of free fonts installed on my Win8 machine (for SVG work on Wikipedia–as they only use free fonts), but I wouldn’t expect most of you to have them. Anyways, I think I’ll stick to the [dingbats](http://www.alanwood.net/unicode/dingbats.html), [geometric shapes](http://www.alanwood.net/unicode/geometric_shapes.html), and [miscellaneous symbols](http://www.alanwood.net/unicode/miscellaneous_symbols.html) from standard Unicode, which have much, much better support. ---

I wonder whether the Unicode emoji code-points are off the Basic Multilingual Plane, and hence have values greater than FFFF hex? And I might as well use color in a post, for the first and I think last time. Ignorance majorly fought, and I’m sure by telling other people I will hasten the inevitable change of the written English language.
