Ender's Game Trailer and Movie

If it makes people feel any better, Ender’s Game is one of his early works, from 1985. Card has always been Mormon, and religious, but there’s evidence that even though he was doctrinally against homosexuality (and a raft of other things), his real hatred has developed since the death of his son at 17 due to cerebral palsy. There is of course no real way to prove that, but his involvement in politics and in religious causes has been much greater now than it was when he was younger, and the visceral opposition that he demonstrates is much more evident now than it was 20 years ago. (That may also be because the internet allows much more intimate views of people and their views in general.)

Please don’t mistake me - he’s always BEEN a bigot, and he’s always been on record as supporting Mormon values and beliefs. It’s just that he didn’t seem to be a flagrant *asshole *about it until after a great personal tragedy. I don’t know if that makes a difference to others, but it does a little bit to me. I won’t read his newer works, but I’ve read and enjoyed Ender’s Game, and I liked the Homecoming series (it’s fun to read a sci-fi version of the Mormon Bible) and I have to admit I even liked Ender’s Shadow (despite it contradicting everything about the original). Some of his other more obscure works (like Treason) are very creative and thought-provoking.

I am very glad that I encountered all of them *before *I knew about his personal values, and I am even more glad that the copies of those books I have purchased have been used, so I know I’m not supporting him financially.

I won’t be seeing Ender’s Game, but that decision is actually irrelevant to my feelings about Card - I am convinced that it will be a HORRIBLE misfire of an adaptation, and I want to keep my good memories of the story intact.

I’ll see it, but probably won’t pay to do so. I don’t like giving bigots my money or implied support.

Mazer Rackham was explicitly Maori in the books. The man’s pretty talented; I’d be surprised if he doesn’t do a good job.

No, that is Bean and even Bean is 6 to 8 in the book. Ender is about 12 in the book, IIRC.

Ender is 6 when the book begins and he’s 10 (or so) when it ends.

Card is a dick, and I hope his movie bombs, if only because it’ll be good for some fun reactions from him complaining about the persecution and intolerance from the evil faggots and faggot-lovers (who are, as we know, crushing good Christian folk under their Prada heels). Me, I wasn’t all that excited about it in the first place, so my failure to attend isn’t really a boycott.

I could have sworn he was 6 when he started, and graduated to Command School at 12, and was at Command School for several years before his ‘final exam’ so he would have been closer to 15 towards the end, but I would have to have mrAru dig them out and give it a re-read.

It’s been years since I read the book, but Wikipedia says that Ender is 6 at the beginning and moves on to Command School at age 10.

Apparently, they took a shot from Knowing. No idea if it is in the final movie, but the trailer has it.

The trailer sets off my “teen wangst” sense – overcoming the problems caused by up-aging the characters to avoid the difficulties of using actual child actors was always going to be the stumbling block on this project, and the impression I’m getting is that of a face meeting the ground.
