If it makes people feel any better, Ender’s Game is one of his early works, from 1985. Card has always been Mormon, and religious, but there’s evidence that even though he was doctrinally against homosexuality (and a raft of other things), his real hatred has developed since the death of his son at 17 due to cerebral palsy. There is of course no real way to prove that, but his involvement in politics and in religious causes has been much greater now than it was when he was younger, and the visceral opposition that he demonstrates is much more evident now than it was 20 years ago. (That may also be because the internet allows much more intimate views of people and their views in general.)
Please don’t mistake me - he’s always BEEN a bigot, and he’s always been on record as supporting Mormon values and beliefs. It’s just that he didn’t seem to be a flagrant *asshole *about it until after a great personal tragedy. I don’t know if that makes a difference to others, but it does a little bit to me. I won’t read his newer works, but I’ve read and enjoyed Ender’s Game, and I liked the Homecoming series (it’s fun to read a sci-fi version of the Mormon Bible) and I have to admit I even liked Ender’s Shadow (despite it contradicting everything about the original). Some of his other more obscure works (like Treason) are very creative and thought-provoking.
I am very glad that I encountered all of them *before *I knew about his personal values, and I am even more glad that the copies of those books I have purchased have been used, so I know I’m not supporting him financially.
I won’t be seeing Ender’s Game, but that decision is actually irrelevant to my feelings about Card - I am convinced that it will be a HORRIBLE misfire of an adaptation, and I want to keep my good memories of the story intact.
