In the England vs Canada game, my question is this, will Canadians remain standing or stand up for the English anthem (God Save the Queen) in addition to their own given that they are subjects of Canada and the national anthem of the UK is essentially talking about the Queen of Canada?

I thought people stood for both anthems. I always have done.

Why wouldn’t they remain standing? Are you suggesting that there may be some type of protest?

1. Americans like to think we who live in a constitutional monarchy are still ‘subjects’ as we have a Monarch, but both Canadians and British people are citizens, not subjects.

2. ‘God Save the Queen’ is about the Head of State who embodies the United Kingdom, not Canada. You need to separate the private person that is Elizabeth Windsor from the figurehead that is Monarch of two different countries. They are, in effect, two people.

Having said that, Canadians are lovely polite people who will, no doubt, stand for the UK’s National Anthem, regardless of the wording.

At sporting events the audience stands for all the anthems played. I mean you can stay sitting or return to your seat if you want but the social expectation is to stand to show respect.

God Save the Queen, while it’s the royal anthem played when the Queen or her representative is present, has nothing else to do with Canada. In the context of a sporting event, it’s the British national anthem and that’s it.

I’ve never seen Americans sit for the Canadian national anthem or vice versa at any baseball, hockey, or basketball games. I can’t imagine why the World Cup would be any different.
