[this page](http://www.curiousfox.com/villages/dorsetvillages.html) has a list of Dorset Villages, if you’re after curious and quaint. I always liked the sound of Piddle and Upper Snodbury, both Worcestershire, or the Bog, Shropshire or Fatherless Barn, West Midlands. A more sensible suggestion would be to take names of county towns, e.g. Oxford, Dorchester, Warwick etc But less sensible suggestions can be foung in [this list](http://www.geoexplorer.co.uk/sections/place_names.htm) of amusing placenames. I’d be tempted to name them after less salubrious or very dull parts e.g. Sunderland, Tipton, Slough, Croydon … (apologies to any dopers originating from such areas and proud of it 😉 ) ---

I can only offer the villages round here - Formby, Blundellsands, Lydiate, Maghull, Heswall. They’re all in Merseyside, with the exception of Heswall, which is now in Cheshire (they moved it). ---

You could also consult the [list](http://www.craptowns.com/html/frontsection/craptowns/30_5/england.htm) of nominees for the crappest town in England. Naturally, my town is on the list, although I was a little disappointed that it only finished 36th in the end, Hull being the eventual winner. ---

How to make an English town name (note this doesn’t really work for Scotland/Wales/Ireland/Cornwall): Take a random one or two syllable made up word. Let’s say, “booger”. Now, if “booger” is a river then you add any of the following endings: -port -mouth -ford If it’s not, then just add one of the following endings: -ton -ham -shire You can mix and match too, ending up with Boogerhamton, or Boogerfordshire. Easy. ---

Serious suggestion! How about Marlow? Beautiful town in Buckinghamshire, right on the river Thames. Think about it… Marlow just sounds a sort of ‘building’ name. Well it does to me anyway!
