Ha, a likely story. Vernon was always a better player than people gave him credit for. I wouldn’t swap him back for Wellens, but I don’t think it was the one-sided deal some Latics fans crow about. Another good win for us tonight - that’s four wins in the last six games. Not Chris Porter this time, but a first goal (and an assist) from our cultured Dutch centre-back Stefan Stam and a winner from the hardest-working man in football, Paul Warne. ---

It is also important when trying for relegation, as evidenced by our 0-2 reverse at the League 1 outpost of Carlisle yesterday. We had many chances but, typically, failed to take them. Currently hanging on to 21st place, and the bottom of the table clash with Leyton Orient on Saturday has assumed massive proportions. A victory will result in a leap up the table to, er… 21st place. ---

Due to injuries the manager had to bring in some of his less regular players last night and apparently Swansea played much better in getting a win. So back up to 8th in the table, and slightly happier fans. However, getting the chairman’s vote of confidence in the club’s programme must be worrying for Jackett (our manager) and if I were him I’d be brushing up my CV just in case. ---

A rejuvenated Blackpool side toyed mercilessly with the opposition when totally destroying the might of Leyton Orient at Bloomfield Road yesterday (_our north-west correspondent writes_). The Seasiders 3-0 victory enables them to stay in 21st place in League One but poised for a surge up the table which will shake this league to its very core. And now for the news every football fan in the country has been waiting for. Yes, Sky TV takes its cameras to the Withdean Stadium next Sunday to cover the mouth watering fixture that is Brighton versus Blackpool. This titanic struggle between two of England’s most decadent seaside resorts is certain to produce a feast of football unparalleled in the history of matches between seaside resorts. Watch enthralled as the Tangerine Tide sweeps inexorably up the pitch and shreds the Brighton defence into shreds. For any lover of the beautiful game (as the famous Brazilian Pepe once called it) it would be sheer folly to miss this feast of football which will leave the TV audience salivating uncontrollably. I don’t know. I’ve never read the back page. While I am here, what gives with the cuddly toy in the City dugout? Pearce was interviewed on Match of the Day on the subject. He said that the toy had been through his daughter’s academy, had looked good in training and fully deserved to be on the coach to Goodison Park. Something like that anyway. Anyway, a terrific response by the boy Pearce. ---

The cuddly toy was given to Pearce at the last home game against Wet Spam which we won. His daughter said it was for luck so Stuart is gonna keep it with him, seems to be working…so far. Yes he’s quite a witty bugger is our gaffer ---

In view of yesterday’s events, bugger was probably not a good choice of words. 🙂 With Barton and Thatcher in his squad though he will have to practice his diplomacy skills too. As for my own team, if the knives were out before for our manager then they are being vigorously sharpened now after our collapse against Forest on Saturday. ---

Chezita and myself are going to Barcelona tomorrow. (Someone, not me, booked a three day break in that fair city, oblivious to the rival attraction taking place at the Withdean.) The flight is scheduled to arrive in Barcelona at 13:50 whereas the game kicks off at 14:30 (Spanish time). What is the Spanish (or Catalan) for “Excuse me my good man, can you please tell me where I can watch the Seagulls play the Seasiders, and make it snappy because time is of the essence?” Muchas gracias.
