Can we start a vermouth side thread? Yes? Ok!
With link when you set it up please?
Ok, here we go: vermouth thread.
I didn’t think clear spirits led to hangovers.
There’s a relatively new brand of gin in my area called New Amsterdam that’s really, really good. It leans towards Hendricks and way away from Gordons, but is less than half the price of Hendricks. It’s become my new standard and I think I’ll cry when they stop carrying it.
I thought New Amsterdam got canceled?
This thread reminds me of an old adage I heard years ago:
A martini is like a woman’s breast. One is never enough, two is just right, and three is probably too many.
Jeff
I bring nothing to the table.
You’re a smarter man than i. Gin was the first “strong” spirit I had ever tasted back in college, and it led to more than a few bad memories including one where I cannot now drink a certain brand or shaped bottle of orange juice/limeade having mixed the entire bottle with cheap gin.
I now eye it with caution- but Gin holds a fond place in my heart. It was also the first drink to teach me about mixing drinks in “parts” and how to be a good host:
I always enjoyed mixing Gin and orange juice in equal parts with a healthy dash of Grenadine (until the whole thing turned pink). It would always end up tasting like grapefruit juice and it looked the part too, which i loved. However, I never really measured the alcohol, but would always make a few Mugs of that for company to enjoy. And that ended up leading a friend or two to the floor as they didn’t realize their 16oz cups were 1part Gin to 1pt OJ, and they thought it was just a bit of gin and mostly Grapefruit juice. I learned that I should always clarify the meaning of 1:1 for some people, and to let them know that they shouldn’t have more than a glass of anything I’ve been mixing. I’m sure the drink would make a more delightful shot though…
Oh, Ginny- you live, you puke, and you learn.
Gin- the spirit best to learn by observation rather than by oneself.
That said, perhaps I’ll try these recipes one day in the future when I can afford better gin than swill.
There are gins other than Bombay Sapphire?
Try that recipe I posted upthread.
I’ve never tried it, but you might also want to take a crack at an Alexander:
1 part gin
1 part creme de cacao
1 part cream
Shake violently, then strain.
Not only that, but there are better gins than Bombay Sapphire. Don’t get me wrong, it’s fine stuff, but its flavor profile is such that there’s not a whole lot you can do with it (it’s great for gin & tonic, but not much else).
Okay, another possibility might be a Sloe Gin Cocktail:
Dash orange bitters
2 parts sloe gin (Plymouth is now making sloe gin in addition to gin gin)
1 part Plymouth gin
Stir & strain.
Optional (I decided to try this just now and it seems to work): Dash of St. Hubertus (sweet herbal liqueur from Hungary; an okay substitute would be Benedictine).
You might also want to try adding some sloe gin to the Alexander and seeing how it turns out.
I miss that stuff too. When I saw a strange bottle of Tanq in a bar a while back, I thought Malacca may have returned, but it turned out to be Rangpur.
