Salvador: I’m guessing you might not be around very long, so allow me to elaborate. The entire area of Europe you describe was conquered in the dark ages by a group called the Moors. The Moors were black muslims from Mauritania, now Morroco. Look at a map. They conquered spain and the greater part of Europe. Racially they were black with some Arabic blood. “White” Europe was basically in a state of barbarism, not even up to a feudal level. The Moorish conquest brought civilization to Europe and sparked the renaissance. Much of Western culture actually has its origins in the Moorish conquests. The Moors are still very much with us as they interbred extensively throughout the Meditarranean. Western concepts of morality have their roots in chivalry which was taught to the Europeans directly by their Moorish conquerors. So, if you want to talk about a Western culture, you’re talking about a culture that was founded by black Islamics who civilized Europe. Them’s the facts. ---

Note the “don’t be a jerk” rule, and even even if you can’t help but be one (as I’ll admit I’ve been on plenty of occasions), try to keep an open mind and a thick skin. One good way is to lurk more and post less: I’ve been here for 39 months, with an average rate of 25 posts a month. You’re up to 21 and it’s not half-way through the month. Seeing as this board has 44,710 members, the chances of learning something from so large a group are a lot better than the possiblility of posting something that will impress the living shit out of all of them, and might also be the more worthwhile prospect. ---

Other than that, the Islamic world remained confined to Asia and North Africa, except for that little bit of northwest Turkey. Though it’s certainly true that the Islamic world played a key role in preserving classical Greek and Latin learning during a period when most of Europe was relatively barbaric. And now you’ve made me feel all icky, having been compelled to challenge a post challenging a racist. I’m definitely not defending Salvador’s ridiculous notions, but let’s not overstate the case either. ---

I hate being pedantic here of all places, but… Anyway you’re both just a little off, though **Ferrous** is closer :). The 8th-9th century Arab/“Moorish” conquests encompassed Iberia ( almost all of it, except a little chunk in the northwest ), most of the more major Mediterranean islands ( Crete, Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, Malta, Cyprus, the Balearics ), bits of southwestern France, and bits of southeastern Italy. Not Greece ( which instead was mostly overrun by Slavs on the mainland, a few strongholds like Thessalonika excepted ) and certainly not the greater part of Europe, though wider areas were threatened and/or raided. Permanent advances into Anatolia didn’t begin until the late 11th century and in mainland Greece and the Balkans not until the 14th ( by which time there was contraction in the west ). The Moors were a mix of Arabs and Berbers. The Berbers can be all over the map racially, but it would appear that a majority are not any less caucasian than the Arabs. At any rate the assumption that most of the early “Moors” were black in the modern sense is probably unwarranted ( though doubtless some were ). That said, the general comments about the relative sophistication of the 8th-11th century Iberian Muslims relative to most of Dark Age Europe are reasonable enough. - Tamerlane ---
