A culchie is someone from “down de country” - there’s an unfair stereotype in Ireland of country people as mutton-headed agricultural traditionalists with ignorant attitudes, and poor taste. However, in this chap’s case, it’s legitimate. ---

And the Pale was a boundry (real and political) around Dublin which was extended over time where British law prevailed. AFAIK it’s were the term “Beyond the Pale” comes from. ---
