Yes, **Scoop** was the book I was alluding to (“Up to a point, my Lord”–hee hee). I could see **Col** in **The Heart of the Matter** , although his thread about the neighbors makes me think more of Brown in **The Comedians**. Nah, not putting you down, **Col** , just some gentle ribbing. ---

Me, too. I have been following this thread with extremely guilty interest. I don’t want to add anything that might incriminate me, but suffice to say, watching _tax lawyers_ attempt to flirt is an experience I would have gladly paid for. I have one friend who is particularly inept in social situations, to the point that he has self-diagnosed himself with Asperger’s. He’s full of shit, of course, he just lacks normal human capacity to think before he talks. We were in this downtown bar once, during my “single and angry” period, having a pretty heated conversation about something fencing-related. He noticed that these two extremely attractive women were looking over at us occasionally from another table. He asked me to back him up in a flirting attempt, and I just told him something like, “no way, you asshole, you are fucking wrong about Monsieur L’Abbat.” So he shrugs and takes care of business himself. He gets up, walks over to their table, and in a fit of social dysfunction, asks them if they believe that the Kennedy assassination was a conspiracy covered up by the government. This did not strike me as the thing to ask college girls with multiple piercings each. I would have fled to the bathroom, but I say, I was rooted to the spot. Somehow he got them to join our table, and even got phone numbers out of them. I suppose I should not be surprised that they never called him back. ---

That was well over a year ago, and life has gotten so much better since. And I suspect we were arguing over fencing due to the happy hour specials. Ordinarily I show a little more restraint. ---

But then they were all various Latin Americans, so maybe that cancelled out the tax lawyer part. ---
