Ok, this is why I **HATE** Trek episodes that resort to magic instead of technology. Plot holes so big you could drive an Imperial Death Star thru them:

1. CLH is telepathic, but when did he become telekinetic?

2. He can shut down all systems on the Enterprise, but he can’t mentally steal the egg-_palantir_ away from Hoshi when she’s holding it hostage.

3. He can’t convince or telekinetically manipulate an alien species to take him out of exile.

4. The Vulcans (or anyone else) wouldn’t trade their pointed ears for access to the _palantir_, or just offer CLH free passage anywhere in exchange for investigation of his mental powers.

And on, and on, and on…

No magic at all. You see Tarquin’s people have interstellar technology (presumably _they_ brought him there). They have replicators (since Tarquin could senthesize food). They can build him a castle (but damn if it’s not a long walk each night blowing out all those candles; and Spring Cleaning is a bitch) so they could build him a Mind-Amplifier. Oh, sorry, his family just happens to _have_ an Amplifier, even though telepaths are randomly 1 in 50 million. He gets to keep it, even though it would logically be _really_ against the law since he says he is exiled because his people are afraid he’ll destroy their civilization. They must have a no-capital-punishment philosophy; so they just put him on Elba. But then again you can’t believe anything he says since he’s probably insane by now.

I like **NCB** s thought - a graveyard as far as the eye could see. But, luckily in that entire castle she stepped out of the _one_ door that led to the graves. :smack:

i hope if i get exiled, America buys me a castle…
Tarquin should just build a robot lady. Then all he has to worry about is Jim Kirk showing up 100 years from now and putting the Shirtless Kirk macking on her, shorting her system. No babe can resist shirtless Kirk!

This episode was the Suck. Hoshi is easily the worst actress on the show. I didn’t think this before the ep, but I do now. It was painful to watch any time she was on screen. The Death Star subplot was promising, and I thought the runaway shuttle gag was funny until they ruined it by ignoring Newton. It would have been much cooler if they had to come up with some ingenious way to get to the now-orbiting shuttle or if they had to walk across the Death Star to follow the shuttle’s ballistic trajectory until it came back down.

I am surprized that no one has mentioned that Hoshi had some nips showing under her cocktail dress at one point. I think **Tars** should check this out and report back. 🙂

Yes but that is a colloquialism as in “You’re ideas are practiaclly Medieval”

When using it to describe a language that is another story. Med\ieval is not a generic term like say ancient. As pointed out in an earlier port one does not refer to Feudal Japan as Medieval Japan. Medieval is a reference to a prticular age and location. Europe, Middle ages. Period.

Speaking of Yangs and Comms Chinas first man to orbit earth in a Chinese mission was named Yang and he was a Comm…unist. Coincidence or spooky omen of things to come?

Actually ‘this’ 🙂 was more visible during the opening scene in her quarters.
At least I though so…

So it’s colder on the ship than in a castle on a freezing planet. Or is she just really excited to see him?
_Hoshi, “Is it always this cold?” Tarquin, “Well no. If you wanted to be warmer you shouldn’t walk around in the snow in your slip. Actually, this is the balmy summer season. Just wait until Winter.”_
BTW, did you notice that Hoshi’s visions had one of the Klingon homeworld and one of someone holding a gun on a very spikey and annoyed chained Targ?

the targ scene was from a first season episode, IIRC.

Really disconcerting is the fact that they keep changing the nature of the characters. Archer is calm and nice and saving races, then he’s suffocating people in airlocks. Trip is happy-go-lucky, then angry and morose since his sister didn’t, then light-hearted and starting up movie night again. T’Pol is logical, then emotional, then annoyed, then aloof, then maniacal, etc. Hoshi is scared of space then volunteering to stay with CLH…

Reed was paranoid about security and pissed at the MACO’s, then in this episode he doesn’t send a security team when Sato first calls for one. He dismisses her experience saying he’s thought he saw a Xindi out of the corner of his eye. Then when Archer listens to Hoshi and wants more security posted around Reed responds with, “Are you expecting an attack?” He should respond with, “About bloody time!” Maybe Reed is mellow like Trip because he’s gettin’ some neuro-pressure on the side too. 🙂

All of these things can be explained away. People are not one-dimensional, stress, circumstances, etc. but it seems such a stretch at times, don’t ya think?

TNG covered the Kirk stuff, too, saying that starfleet regs now discouraged Captains on away teams.
Just a way of covering their ass with a geek boy tie in.

First contact is a special case of an away team.

Maybe they changed their mind.

At some point between Kirk and Picard, Captains became wimps. Except for Sisko. Probably close to Kirk, what with TSFS and “Let’s gibe them a little more time.”
