And ya think he could drop their precious rule and just read the Romulans thoughts and find the truth?[_]Using T’Pol or Jhamel to disrupt the shroud ship’s control is how they phrased it at first, but didn’t I later hear them talking about making the ship turn or somesuch? That would have required pilot trining. While T’Pol would have some, I doubt Jhamel does.[_]Trip runs away too much. Let’s assume that the human being is a rather husky adult male weighing in at **one hundred kilograms** , and that we’d like the orbit to be a **circular orbit** at a distance of **ten meters** from the center of mass of the human. At that distance, we can pretty much neglect the shape of the human and assume that all of his mass is concentrated at a point at his center of mass. As we know from basic rotational dynamics, the centripetal acceleration required to keep a satellite moving in a circular path is v^2/r, where v is the (linear) velocity of the satellite and r is the radius of the circle. We also know, from the Plant’s equation quoted above, that the acceleration due to gravity of a satellite is MG/r^2, where M is the mass of the thing being orbited and G is the Newtonian Gravitational constant. (We’ll assume the mass of the satellite is negligible when compared with the mass of the human, otherwise the center of mass of the two-body system will be different than the human’s center of mass and the equations will get a lot messier\*.) As stated in the paragraph above, M = 100kg, and r = 10m. G, according to my handy-dandy physics textbook, is 6.672 x 10^-11 N m^2/kg^2. So, we need to determine what value for v will provide exactly as much centripetal acceleration as the acceleration due to gravity. That requires that v^2/r = MG/r^2. Multiplying both sides by r and then taking the square root of both sides, we find that v = SQRT(MG/r). If we plug in the numbers given in the paragraph above, we find that **v = 2.583 x 10^-5 m/s** , or about 9.3 centimeters per hour. This is roughly Warp 0.00004415 on the TOS scale. \*) That’s “messier” as in more messy, not the guy who numbered all the nebulae. ---
