Entertainment traditions you miss

Saturday, 2 a.m.! Woot! Thank you!

Oh, drat! Never mind! Hulu it is for me.

Local Chicago horror host Svengoolie is now syndicated on the Me-TV cable channel. It also appears on digital broadcast sub-channels. Here is a list of affiliates. Sven airs on Saturday nights, at 9 pm Chicago time…

I miss a general lack of spoilers. Being able, for instance, to wonder how long that the guest bad guy would be around instead of knowing that the actor signed a five-episode contract, so since it’s the fourth episode he’s been in, I guess they’re going to get rid of him next week. (Yes, I know it’s my responsibility to avoid spoilers, and I don’t mind admitting I’m not always disclipined enough to go to the effort.)

I kinda miss the Big Jolly Family Cheezeball Christmas Specials. Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. The King Family. Kathy Lee Gifford. Andy Williams! You know. Sleigh rides (sing Christmas song), bring in the Christmas tree (sing Christmas song), decorate (sing), bake cookies (sing) big jolly loving family all gathered round the fireplace hanging up stockings (sing sing sing)…“from our family to yours, the very merriest of Christmases”. Maybe they were mocked too much. And whatever happened to the Muppets Christmas, and Emmet Otter? Fraggle Rock? Disappeared!

The UHF channels would do Friday Night Monsterfests or Sherlock Homes/Charlie Chan Theatre on Friday/Saturday nights, during the 70s.

Or Tarzan. Lots o Johnny Weissmuller.

Milwaukee had especially good ones.

The Box. A video music channel that you’d call in and request (for a charge) the songs you wanted to hear. I could only get it on our tiny (4 or 5 inch) black and white TV in our kitchen that didn’t have cable so I watched it every morning before I went to school.

Holy cow, I totally remember this now that you brought it up! Not only that but I actually requested music from it!

I’m sure one of them was about showing Robin Sherbotski his Harvey tray collection.

XM Radio has a 90’s station and every once in a while I’ll hear a song that’ll take me right back to The Box.
Oochie Coochie - MC Brains
Knockin Boots - Candyman
Ditty - Paperboy
Addams Family - MC Hammer
Informer - Snow (everybody had at least one friend 'that knew all the lyrics)

Those once a year movie showings… Wizard of Oz or Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. It was such a big deal for us! We’d get to stay up late, and my mom would make popcorn. I kinda felt bad for my kids growing up; they had the videos of these movies, and while they could watch them again and again, they never got the “specialness” of those annual showings.

Battle of the Network Stars was one of my favorite moments of the TV year when I was a kid. It was the one time you got to see all the hot guys from series in Speedos.

Not just Matinee at the Bijou - Wikipedia but the earlier days in my life when Saturdays were just like that.

Also, “miss” isn’t quite the right word, but I do have some nostalgia for the years when Warner Bros. had the corner on the market for Westerns like:

Cheyenne
Sugarfoot
Maverick
Bronco Lane
Lawman

In the 1950s, a local theater used to have all-day kiddie marathons featuring Francis the Talking Mule movies, Ma & Pa Kettle movies, and Flash Gordon serials. Saturday morning I’d walk to the theater, and Saturday evening I’d return home thoroughly entertained, reeking of pickle juice and Junior Mints.

This is the first thing that came to mind when I read the title of the OP - Saturday morning previews. Great stuff.

I miss listening to Dr. Demento on Sunday nights in my college dorm room. Actually, I just miss listening to Dr. Demento period.

You weren’t my college roommate, were you? We listened to that every week.

Not unless you were female and really into horses.

Guest stars who would play themselves. I loved the Scooby Doo with Don Knotts.

Ah. Not, then. Oddly enough, my roommate is “usually under a cat” too, though.

I have to forward this thread to him - he’ll laugh.
