Some were killed for money. But it was also done deliberately as a weapon of war, to deny food to peoples who depended on it.

WOW. I did not realize how massive a problem this is! Here is a [space.com](http://space.com) article on the mountains odds discarded clothes in the Atacama Desert being visible from space.
