I think there’s one very important quality-of-life factor you’re all overlooking: It’s fun to be smart! Oh, there are downsides, of course; highly intelligent people know forms of pain the average can barely imagine – but also forms of pleasure the average can barely imagine. Wouldn’t it make life richer if most people were really smart?
You got a cite on that one? I don’t think how smart one is dictates their emotional ranges (save of course in the developmentally disabled).
Intelligence and motivation aren’t neccesarily correlated, but they aren’t negatively correlated either. If 1 guy in 10 is smart, and 1 guy in 10 is motivated, you’re going to end up with 81% dumb lazy guys, 9% dumb motivated guys, 9% smart lazy guys, and 1% smart motivated guys. Guess who ends up ruling the world?
Whoever can best manipulate the 81% that’s dumb and lazy, of course. Which may not be that magical 1%.

Vulcan? I’m talking smart, not logical.

No, I’m talking about the Earth society that appears in Star Trek. Everybody basically has advanced degrees in something, (frequently more than one thing) and they all work hard, for free! There is no money. After energy gets so cheep that all of life’s necsesities are supplied, man then, instead of sitting around on his ass, goes out and better himself, purely for the betterment of society.

The level of political discourse goes up. Currently, what is political feasible is largely ruled by what can be condensed into a 30 second sound bite.

I, Kozmik, declare the era of the sound bite over. Behold, the YouTube clip.
