Very sad ☹ A truly classy guy, and an icon of the heyday of a now faded city. But at least he lived a great life, and got to prepare for the end and take care of any business he felt required before he went. Goodbye Ernie. ---

He was one of the best. He is also one of my favorite pieces of baseball trivia. The only announcer to be traded for a player. How good do you have to be for that to happen? ---

One of the local news stations tonight interviewed Sparky Anderson on his friendship with Ernie Harwell. Sparky (who looks ready to die himself) was nearly bawling, in tears. Says a lot about both men. ---

I have to believe there is no celebrity more universally loved and respected than Ernie. If anyone wants to bash Detroit - for any reason - my response will be, “Yeah, but we had Ernie Harwell.” Make that _have_ Ernie. He is still with us. MMM ---

He would walk the stands before the games just saying hello to the fans. I bumped into him a couple times. He was friendly and polite to all. ---
