IOW, Religious Tolerance 'Merkin style. It goes right back to the beginning. It was wrong then, and it’s wrong now. The difference is they didn’t know any better. we do. What 's our excuse? ---

Well, to be fair, _Religious Tolerance 'Merkin style_ was an advance over the previous centuries of [_Cuius regio, eius religio_](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuius_regio,_eius_religio), or just straight up “Death to the heretics!” And the United States Constitution (and the aforementioned Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom) are vastly better than even that, and were truly revolutionary: > [@](#): > > …no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.
