Shhhh! The poor, defenseless, innocent, puppy dog eyed Kuwaitis! Just like the Kurds!
As war?
Get real.
I don’t think slant-drilling is a cause for war either, SimonX; I simply disagree with the implication in Ryan_Liam’s post that Saddam invaded po’ helpless Kuwait because he didn’t have anything else to do on Saturday night.
Well I never claimed that, but what am saying is that Kuwait isn’t dumb enough to anger its much larger and militaristic neigbour, what Saddam did then was similar to mafia extortion to pay off his massive war debts after the Iranian fiasco.
Well said, http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=5429819&postcount=68’luc/b].
Excellent query. Care to remind me of what happened next? Because this old foggy appears to recall that a very large, UN-approved coallition of nations led by the US proceeded to kick their asses back to Iraq in no time. In fact, I also recall backing said military response – although the shameful highway of death incidents only served as a reminder as to why leaders should be so reticent in advocating the use of force. Mindless cheerleaders need not apply either.
BTW, must say that I am impressed by the comprehensive and well thought out rebuttal you presented to my last post directed at you.
What’s that you say? That since you didn’t even bother to read my posts to begin with, how could I possibly expect such a reply?
My point exactly. Glad we agree.

Tell me, who were exactly on that Highway of death? Innocent Iraqi troops? No, it was the republican guard, who had raped and pillaged downtown Kuwait City.
No, actually, those weren’t Republican Guard troops. Those particular divisions were engaged in an entirely different battle.
And frankly, what does that have to do with this war, anyway? We won Gulf War 1991. It was long over.
Bollocks, even if not the Republican guard, it certainly was Iraqi troops, a viable target when they retreated from Kuwait. War isn’t entirely humanitarian, the aim is to destroy and demoralise the enemy. Stop being so naive.
Do you find the Geneva conventions “quaint”?
