Ethnic Composition of Mormonism

I think you’re mistaking someone needing to be heavily heavily medicated with thoughts of being lucky.

Regardless–and I’m still not sure how we got to this bizarre point–the Dutch, as a whole, consider themselves neither Nordic nor Scandinavian. Some individuals might, but they are exceptions…and I honestly have no idea on what evidence they would base that opinion. Certainly not language, history, culture or tradition.
.

So I was just reading the Wikipedia description of The Wandering Jew, which has many interesting people and notions, and it indicated Cain was an influence; so I looked up Cain.

There:
In Latter-day Saint theology, Cain is considered to be the quintessential Son of Perdition, the father of secret combinations (i.e. secret societies and organized crime), as well as the first to hold the title Master Mahan meaning master of [the] great secret, that [he] may murder and get gain.

In Mormon folklore — a second-hand account relates that an early Mormon leader, David W. Patten, encountered a very tall, hairy, dark-skinned man in Tennessee who said that he was Cain. The account states that Cain had earnestly sought death but was denied it, and that his mission was to destroy the souls of men. The recollection of Patten’s story is quoted in Spencer W. Kimball’s The Miracle of Forgiveness, a popular book within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This widespread Mormon belief is further emphasized by an account from Salt Lake City in 1963 which stated that "One superstition is based on the old Mormon belief that Cain is a black man who wanders the earth begging people to kill him and take his curse upon themselves.
The Wiki on David W. Patten says also:
In the 1980s, Patten’s story was used by some Latter-day Saints to explain Bigfoot sightings in South Weber, Utah.

It is worth repeating that mormons avoid alcohol.

Your understanding of the word “opinion” is also wrong. I’ll make it very easy for you: statements of fact that are falsifiable - like whether the Dutch consider themselves Scandinavian - are not “opinions.” Opinions are statements which are not falsifiable. “The sky is blue” is a statement of fact. “Blue skies are pretty” are a statement of opinion.

“The Dutch do consider themselves to be Scandinavian as well” (which, for the record, is what you said) is a statement of fact. “I think the Dutch consider themselves Scandinavian” is a statement of opinion.

You’re welcome.

So, when you said he was lucky, you meant you are heavily heavily medicated? And when you said the Dutch consider themselves Scandinavian, you meant that to be an opinion?

I feel like I need a new dictionary. And a chart.

There’s a good reason for that. Plastic surgery.

Which also leads to high rates of depression.

In the Book of Mormon, there is an account of three white men, Nephites, who were granted their wish to remain on the Earth until the Second Coming. This generated countless folklore concerning encounters with them, such as helping change tires, and such.

I always find it amazing that people are so offended when someone has an opinion about who they feel is smarter, better looking etc. It’s called insecurity. Extreme insecurity.

And every ‘comment’ and ‘fact’ is called quibbling. Using other reasons and descriptions etc to try and distract from the real question at hand.

It works for the masses most excellently because, well, the masses are not that bright.

Example? Gov Christie has excellent ideas in his policies. But everyone keeps focusing on his weight. What does how much he weighs have anything to do with the way he leads? When you can’t find fault in the person’s comments. Try and discredit the person with other unrelated things.

Ever go to Disneyland? It is a great representation of the general population of the world. And America in general. The majority of people are average in appearance to highly unattractive. Get used to it. The chances of every reader here being average to ugly is very high. Get used to it. you didn’t win the genetics lottery.

Gotta run. Have a life but will be back when I can.

Say hi to your Scandinavian Dutch friends for us.

And the Mormon women, who are all blonde and Caucasian where you live.

I have actually noticed this too in statistics.

I wonder to what extent this is due to a cultural emphasis on Anglo-Saxon heritage and its associated prestige and to what extent it can actually be seen in people’s genealogy and/or DNA.

Given the research that has been done on my own ancestry by myself and some of my relatives, I can “claim” any of the following ancestries and/or ethnicities:

English
Scottish Highlander
Scottish Lowlander
Irish (i.e. just plain Irish)
Northern Irish
Western Irish
Ulster Scots
Ulster Scots Appalachian
Pennsylvania Dutch
German (i.e. just plain Deutsch)
Low German/Plattdüütsch
Welsh

Although I do not have individualized evidence at the present time, I almost certainly also have some Scandinavian admixture due to the Viking presence all around the British Isles and down into France and Germany for hundreds of years and the statistical near-certainty that some of that blood can be found somewhere in the past hundred generations.

So, which one of those ancestries do I put on official forms? It probably depends a lot on how I perceive the prestige of each ancestry, how closely I feel aligned culturally with each ethnicity, what I know about the approximate percentages of each ancestry that I have (e.g. 1/32nd something, 1/64th something else…), what cultures my first, middle, and last name derive from, how I’m feeling that day, and probably a good healthy random fudge factor.

Yep. Pretty much.

Perhaps one can start looking around where they live and have an epiphany that wow, people around me are average in intelligence and appearance.

There are select pockets where there is a higher than normal concentration of good looking people. Los Angeles, New York City and most of all Utah.

Other than that. The rest of the country is average: Mildly to severely overweight, not the brightest bulbs in the pack and average drive and ambition.

Now, back to my life. You know surrounded by amazingly above average people both in looks and intelligence.

See? I’m back when I can.

Nothing new added. So over and out…for now.

Yeah, it’s all those aspiring models and actresses who flock to New York, LA, and… Utah. :dubious:

Utah is 39th in per capita income. For all that “drive and ambition”, your people seemingly don’t do much better than Mississippi and Alabama.

Looks are subjective; intelligence less so. Any actual evidence for Utah’s above average intelligence?

Utah has relatively more stay-at-home moms and a large number of kids (personally, I blame the Mormons for this). So, while our per-capita income is 39th, in median per-household income Utah ranks #14. Not looking so Mississippi-ish anymore, eh?

what would we do without the 50.1 percentors?

Really, though, how intelligent are people who can’t keep their own ethnic heritage straight?

Fair enough, but that hardly makes Utah the paradise of the intelligentsia that DaMan is claiming (particularly in conjunction with your 22nd national ranking in ACT scores).

ACT and SAT scores are horrible indicators of a state’s intelligence. In some states, most or all kids take the ACT. This drives their average score down. In other states, relatively few kids that are planning on attending out-of-state colleges (ie some of the smartest kids) take the ACT. This dynamic drives their average score up. The same is also true of the SAT.

Take a look at http://www.act.org/newsroom/data/2014/states.html and you’ll see that, of those states that have 100% of their graduates tested, Utah has the highest average score.

I don’t understand what this is referring to. Are Utahns under some mass-confusion about their ethnic heritage?

I suspect that Utahn, chock full of Mormons with a strong interest in genealogy, knows more (on average) about ethnic heritage than most states.

Of course you are ignoring the portions where…it came to pass…that if they become righteous that their skin would lighten.

Again you are correct that the misconstrued notion that skin color made you sinful is not LDS doctrine, but it was historical doctrine that their skin is dark because they were sinful.
