My mom saves bacon grease-- it’s her southern roots showing-- usually in a jar from which the label has been removed. In recent years she hasn’t been cooking meals for the family and the bacon grease was moved to a smaller jar, namely one that once held lemon curd. Mom loves lemon curd so much she often eats it straight from the jar. Yes, that’s right, one day she wasn’t paying attention and spooned a great big bunch of cold bacon grease right into her mouth. She brushed her teeth six times and still couldn’t get that taste out. ---

Not a mistake, but a very nasty surprise. Mr. Rilch and I both like Diet Pepsi. We also both like real maple syrup on pancakes and waffles. I had never seen an expression like that on his face, and haven’t since. It was too late to stop myself, though. “Poisonous” is the only way I can describe the taste. ---
