> How many American women move to rural China to marry backwards ultra-‘traditional’ sexist Chinese peasant farmers? Probably a lot closer to zero.

I never said those women would be American; the foreign women in question are usually Korean, Laotian, Vietnamese, Uzbek, that sort of thing.

It is very likely that such a marriage would be traditional in that the man would definitely be the boss. He would have far more control over the course of the marriage in any event, because the foreign wife would have to acculturate and would likely be (and feel) quite isolated.

As I said, I was reporting anecdotal evidence; but after a certain point/number of anecdotes, it becomes fairly compelling. I doubt that female infanticde in China is on a par with alligators in the sewers and exploding microwaved poodles.

Please, let’s not do this SD message board thing of saying that something couldn’t possibly be true because you can’t citecitecitecitecite it. I _don’t know_ if what I speculated is true or not. I offered a possible explanation for a phenomenon for which _no one else offered a definitive explanation, either_.

Europeans and Chinese have been interbreeding and intermingling for centuries. The premise that babies born to such unions are inherently less viable is silly and baseless.

Example:

> The implications of this discovery are far reaching. Clearly the ancient world of 3000-4000 years ago was more of a melting pot than has previously been believed, and cultures from Northern Europe and Asia were well known to each other. It paints a picture of a more cosmopolitan ancient world, and makes it easier to understand why some myths, stories and art are common to so many cultures. For example, the ‘endless knot’ of the Celts is a familiar motif in Chinese art as well. Did the red-haired warrior and the Sleeping Beauty of Loulan help to bring them into Asia – or did others of their culture take them back instead?

Take the Uyghur people for example:
[https://www.google.com/search?q=Uyghur&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&authuser=0&ei=yhnNUZfqBMjh0wGGh4CgDg&biw=1138&bih=553&sei=zRnNUeaYHuay0AHS\_YGwDg](https://www.google.com/search?q=Uyghur&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&authuser=0&ei=yhnNUZfqBMjh0wGGh4CgDg&biw=1138&bih=553&sei=zRnNUeaYHuay0AHS_YGwDg)

The Uyghurs are an Eurasian (mixed ancestry) population with Eastern and Western Eurasian anthropometric and genetic traits. Uyghurs are thus one of the many populations of Central Eurasia that can be considered to be genetically related to European and East Asian populations. I’m a sinologist(amateur), speak fluent Mandarin, lived in Mainland China for nearly 20 years, lived in the Chinese countryside for 3 years in the 1980s, my wife still holds a PRC passport and my kids were born there.

This happens to be General Questions. It is the place for cites and facts, and not the place for wags. There are other forums such as IMHO for wags. I get you’re new here and don’t know how the place works, so here’s a friendly guide to the different forums: [http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/index.php](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/index.php)

Female infanticide absolutely happens in China. No one is saying otherwise. However, you have made several claims that are factually incorrect, and I’ve conveniently provided cites that you’re free to read and maybe learn something from.

It’s strange to me, I am all for clamping down on the WAGs but it seems like 90+% of all GQ threads start out with unsubstantiated WAGs before anyone bothers to even attempt a factual answer, it’s very inconsistent…or rather, it’s consistently _bad._
